Grand Forks is a city in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. It is at the junction of the Granby and Kettle Rivers. The city is located around 500 miles north of Vancouver, 200 km west of Kelowna, and 23 km west of the resort region of Christina Lake.
Grand Forks was named after the North Fork bridge, where the rivers meet, in 1894. However, the valley, dominated by copper mining, was named Grand Prairie, and so was the town. Grand Forks was incorporated on April 15, 1897. The City of Columbia was founded on May 4, 1899. A smelter, coal mines, a post office, school and hospital were all at Grand Forks by 1902. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) Columbia and Western Railway, the Kettle River Valley Railway, and the Great Northern Railway served Grand Forks (GNR). Grand Forks and Columbia merged in 1903 but only after much debate over a name.
